THE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE INSTITUTE AWARDS JETSE BATELAAN WITH THE ITI PRIZE DURING THEATER DER WELT

After the German premiere of the music theatre performance Die Geschichte von der Geschichte, Jetse Batelaan will be awarded with the ITI Prize. Since 2016, this prestigious prize for the lifelong theatre work of excellent artists has been focused on the younger generation. The institute pays tribute to Batelaan’s remarkable theatre oeuvre and encourages the artist to take further steps in their internationalisation.

This is the second time that the prize has been awarded to a Dutch person. In 2014 it was Johan Simons’ turn. Other former winners include Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, Christoph Marthaler and Anna Viebrock.

Jetse Batelaan, artistic director of Theater Artemis since 2013, is praised by the jury members as “one of the most unconventional protagonists of a new generation of theatre professionals in Europe”. The jury applauds his productions for “their strong visual language, their exuberant imagination and absurd humour. His work is ground-breaking and is aimed as much at children and young people as at adults.”

German premiere 

After the Theater Biennale in Venice, Aichi Triennale in Nagoya, and Teatro Lliure in Barcelona, Het Verhaal van het Verhaal continues its international tour in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus during festival Theater der Welt. The triennial festival was originally scheduled for May 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. The festival is presenting the performances live with a live stream from 17 June to 4 July 2021.
