The Book that Almost Wasn't Written

Hester van Hasselt (2018)

“The Book that Almost Wasn’t Written”. A conversation about embarrassment, about hierarchy and Eureka. About that theatre is boring, about virtuoso players who are rarely mentioned in a review, about language that stumbles, about rooms full of children who suddenly become part of what happens on the stage. About panic and confidence, about compromise and unyielding. Hester van Hasselt in conversation with Jetse Batelaan.

The book presentation of “Conversations with Makers: Jetse Batelaan” took place on Saturday October 6 in Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Hester van Hasselt interviewed Jetse Batelaan and wrote “The Book that Almost Wasn’t Written”. After the performance “The story of the story” by Artemis during The Krakeling Festival, Marijn van de Jagt engaged in a conversation with Jetse Batelaan, Hester van Hasselt and Ditte Pelgrom.

This series aims to contribute to the memory of the theatre in the Netherlands. The practice, thinking and knowledge of performing artists themselves is centralised. “Conversations with Makers” want to offer the creators the opportunity to speak out in their own language, and from their own experience and interest. “Conversations with Makers” is a collaboration between DAS Research, the research group of the Academy of Theater and Dance and De Nieuwe Toneelbibliotheek.
