De Biënnale van Venetië reikt de Zilveren Leeuw uit aan auteur-regisseur Jetse Batelaan, “theatermaker van innovatief jeugdtheater, en niet alleen dat”.
“Just over forty years old, director Jetse Batelaan has become established on the international scene as a singular and innovative artist, with a strong and recognizable highly personal approach to theatre. Presenting works of powerful visual impact, Batelaan reinterprets contemporary myths, creating a kind of magic on the stage that seduces even the most sceptical of spectators. Thanks to his masterful use of theatrical conventions, the Dutch director, who chooses to address his works primarily to audiences of adolescents and children, succeeds in involving people of all ages, a characteristic that is intrinsic to great popular theatre. With Batelaan, theatre for children, which is often mistakenly considered to be second-class or in a category below ‘official’ theatre, reclaims the importance it deserves and which has been acknowledged in the past, as the history of the Biennale Theatre demonstrates”, aldus de motivatie.
Jetse Batelaan will present two productions during the 47th International Theatre Festival in Venice (22 July > 5 August): The Story of the Story, an archaeology of storytelling, and War, which addresses tragic themes with profound and unexpected levity.
Eerste Nederlander
Momenteel legt Jetse de allerlaatste hand aan zijn nieuwe 12+productie (…..), die morgen in Frankfurt in première gaat (coproductie Artemis, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm & Ruhrtriennale). De aankondiging van de prijs komt voor hem als een volslagen verrassing.
Theater Artemis maakt internationaal een enorme groei door. De Biënnale legde in 2017 het eerste contact met het gezelschap. In 2019 is het zover en staan tijdens de 47e editie twee jeugdregies van Jetse centraal. Het Verhaal van het Verhaal wordt de openingsvoorstelling van de Biënnale van Venetië. Daarnaast maakt de internationale festivalhit Oorlog deel uit van het programma dat wordt gepresenteerd in Venetiës oudste (1622) en meest prestigieuze Goldoni Theatre.
De Zilveren Leeuw is een prijs van de Biënnale voor jong talent in de wereld van de podiumkunsten. Terwijl de Gouden Leeuw levenslange artistieke verdienste beloont, is de Zilveren Leeuw een erkenning voor de artiesten van de volgende generaties. Als eerste Nederlander prijkt nu ook Jetses naam in de lijst van laureaten. Wij zijn trots!
De Zilveren Leeuw werd eerder uitgereikt aan Rimini Protokoll (2011), Angélica Liddell (2013), Fabrice Murgia (2014), Agrupación Señor Serrano (2015), Babilonia Teatri (2016), Maja Kleczewska (2017), en Anagoor (2018).
